History
The decision to set up I2IT was made in 1999 by P. P. Chhabria, industrialist and philanthropist and Vijay P. Bhatkar, scientist, and the first postgraduate (PG) course took place in 2001–2003. The Indira Gandhi National Open University center of excellence was set up in 2010. IT started its UG course in 2011.
Academics
IIIT (I2IT)-Pune is one of the premier colleges in the country.I2IT offers PG programmes. The technical schools, School of Information Technology and School of Interdisciplinary Science offer Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Science (MS) with various specializations, as well as an integrated Ph.D program. The School of Biotechnology offers only MS courses. The School of Management offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) course as well as an Executive MBA.[2]
The college afterwards started an Undergraduate Engineering college affiliated to Pune University under the same name as the PG college. It offers Bachelor of Engineering degree in 3 streams: Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Science and Information Technology

The Institute offers four years full-time Bachelor of Engineering (B. E.) degree courses in Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer and Information Technology. The institute is also recognized Research Centre of University of Pune for undertaking Ph. D. degree research in above fields under Faculty of Engineering.

With unprecedented and accelerating demand of miniature electronic communication and control devices, it has been challenge from quite long time to study and research the electronic materials, devices and circuits, microprocessor, microcontrollers and their interfacing devices, related signal processing and efficient software systems to drive them. On the other hand with the explosive growth of the users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in last two decades, there is a tremendous increase in deployment of communication infrastructures, large carrier class wire-line and wireless networks for convergence of voice, data and video. Consumer market for broadband applications such as voice, data, multimedia, video, gaming, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and entertainment, signal transport has gained high velocity. Service providers and operators are actively moving towards IP-based Next-Generation Networks (NGNs), where transport over existing TDM infrastructure is being replaced with transport over IP infrastructure with very high Quality of Service (QoS). IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is emerging as the industry standard of choice for the NGNs. The great success of the Internet and wireless communications has opened a new vista for future all-IP applications. Such convergence of communication networks and miniaturisation of devices and systems are posing interesting technological and business challenges.
Hence, to tackle all such ever growing challenges in the fastest growing electronics, networking and telecommunication industry, Dept of Electronics and Telecommunication of I²IT offers Bachelor of Engineering (B. E.) course in Electronics and Telecommunication. This Four Years Full-Time degree course provides comprehensive, theoretical, practical and real life knowledge of Electronics and Telecommunication as demanded by the industry today and for the future. The Department also offers Doctoral (Ph. D.) research opportunities in the above field. The department has the state-of-the-art laboratories with all the required equipments and softwares. The Department has highly qualified, committed and motivated full-time faculty, many of them have been involved in teaching as well as in research.

Department of Computer Engineering offers Four Years Full-time Bachelor of Engineering (B. E.) in Computer. The department imparts a sound theoretical education with practical and real-time project work, which prepares the students in wider field of Computer Engineering to take up challenges in field of computer science and engineering. | For the aspirants taking engineering education, it is very important to have abilities to apply knowledge of mathematics and sciences to engineering problems. It is also crucial to have good analytical and data interpretation skills so that one can identify the problems and provide optimum solutions. At the same time, they should have also understanding of perceptive of professional and ethical responsibilities.
Under Department of Applied Sciences and Engineering, the students are prepared and taught the physical, chemical and mathematical sciences with applied approach. The department also imbibes basic engineering principles by teaching the students subjects related to Mechanical and Civil Engineering.
With a holistic approach to student development, along with academics, there is a strong focus on extra-curricular activities which instill values of leadership and team building. This important task of life skills development is also handled by department. To produce proficient members in the science and engineering communities, the department provides an encouraging environment which helps them to develop their intellectual and critical thinking capabilities.
The Department has highly qualified and experienced faculty with diverse educational background. The Department has all the necessary laboratories required for first year of engineering course as per the syllabus of University of Pune. All the laboratories and workshop are well equipped with modern infrastructure so that the student can gain maximum knowledge through that. The Department fosters departmental and interdisciplinary teaching and research because of diversity of faculty it has.
