Vision

Establish scientific institutions of the highest caliber where teaching and education are totally integrated with state-of-the-art research

  • Make learning of basic sciences exciting through excellent integrative teaching driven by curiosity and creativity
  • Entry into research at an early age through a flexible borderless curriculum and research projects

The Government of India, based on the recommendation of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), has established five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)(Hindi: भारतीय विज्ञान शिक्षण एवं अनुसंधान संस्थान) in 2006. These institutes are currently located in Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram. IISERs are a unique initiative in science education in India in which teaching and education will be totally integrated with the state-of-the-art research nurturing both curiosity and creativity in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research. IISERs are destined to become Science Institutes of the highest caliber and reach the prestigious position in the global setting that IISc, IIMs and IITs presently enjoy.

Each IISER is an autonomous institution awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees. Students are encouraged to carry out research projects during the vacation periods in the first four years of their Masters programme in various research institutes outside IISER.The teaching classrooms, teaching laboratories and research laboratories are located at the Central and Western towers of the Sai Trinity Building, Pashan, Pune. The construction of the final campus has begun.

Objectives

BS-MS Programme

Education

The five-year BS-MS program is a flagship program of IISER Pune.

The first two years involve a set of mandatory courses in Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a few courses from Humanities, Arts and the Earth Sciences. These two years aredevoted to creating a broad knowledge base in the basic sciences.

The third and fourth years are devoted to developing a few specific areas in depth. They involve a choice of specialized courses from the within the broad areas introduced in the first two years. IISER Pune is unique among the IISERs in only having a credit requirement each semester. Thus, a student may take courses from across the disciplines or choose to focus on courses from a particular discipline.

The final year at IISER Pune does not involve any course work so students focus entirely on research and the resulting Masters thesis. This model has resulted in a large number of publications involving undergraduate student authors. Click here to view a list of all under graduate students’ publications from IISER Pune.

i-PhD

Integrated PhD Programme

The integrated PhD (i-PhD) programme at IISER Pune is aimed at highly motivated students who wish to pursue a career in research. Students with an excellent academic record can apply for the i-PhD programme upon completion of a B.Sc. degree in the sciences or a B.Tech / B.E. degree in allied engineering disciplines. The course combines curricula for masters and doctorate degrees into a single integrated programme with a blend of course work and research projects.

The first four semesters are dedicated to a broad-based science curriculum of core, elective and advanced courses specialized in one subject in combination with research work. This will be followed by the doctoral research project. On successful completion, students will be awarded both a Master of Science and a PhD degree.

IISER Pune offers modern research laboratories and computational facilities as well as comfortable housing for students. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops, giving them a chance to interact with people from other research organizations within the country and abroad.

The i-PhD program is currently offered in the Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences; and Mathematics. Click the following links to know more about the ongoing research in these disciplines at IISER Pune.

Ph.D.

Research at IISER Pune covers a wide range of research areas in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. In addition, we actively encourage research initiatives that span multiple disciplines.

IISER Pune offers modern research laboratories and computational facilities as well as comfortable housing for students selected into a graduate program at the institute. A core component of graduate student life at IISER Pune includes opportunities to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops. This gives our students a chance to interact with people from other research organizations within the country and abroad.

2.Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2014: Students securing a place in the rank list of Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
3.State and Central Boards: Those, who are eligible for INSPIRE scholarship by Department of Science and Technology (DST) on the basis of their aggregate scores in class XII may be considered for admission after clearing an aptitude test.
The first two years of the 5 year programme involves coursework in all subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Humanities and Interdisciplinary courses). For the next two years, the students choose courses across subjects, as per their liking. The final year is spent on a research project.

  • Doctoral Program (Ph.D.): Admission to the doctoral program is after a Master’s degree in science. Besides the students of the Integrated Master’s program, Postgraduate students with a Master’s degree in science from other Universities/Institutes will also be admitted to the doctoral program.

The program will involve course work, a qualifying examination, a state-of-the-art seminar, thesis work, open seminar and a thesis examination, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The quantum of course work will vary depending on the background of the student. Besides individual research, students will be involved in several professional activities such as seminars, workshops, presentations and review meetings. All doctoral students will assist faculty members in teaching during the course of the doctoral program.

  • Integrated Doctoral Program (Int. Ph.D.): Admission to this program is after a B.Sc. degree in any of the basic sciences. Students of this program start their course by attending their class with third year students of Dual Degree B.S.- M.S. course.
