Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), formerly Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, and one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia. Founded in 1887, it was rechristened to its present name on 26 January 1997.[2] VJTI is an academically and administratively autonomous institute, however it is a part of the University of Mumbai and its degrees & diplomas are issued by the University, and the institute is financially supported by the Government of Maharashtra.

After being awarded academic & administrative autonomy in 2004, VJTI became operational under the administration of a Board of Governors.[3] VJTI is also the Central Technical Institute of Maharashtra State. The Institute is reputed for excellent training in programs in engineering and technology at the certificate,[4] diploma, degree, post-graduate and doctoral levels, as well as numerous well-regarded research works.

The Institute has 12 academic departments.[12]

Organization

At the institutional level, VJTI is governed by a Board of Governors with a Chairman, the Director as a member and other Members of the Board. Members include Heads of Industry, prominent VJTI alumni as well as Heads of other educational institutions. The current Chairman of the Board is Nusli Wadia, Chairman, Bombay Dyeing.

Activities

The Gymkhana Group

The gymkhana is concerned with sports, both outdoor and indoor. There are playgrounds for cricket, football, volleyball and a tennis court. At the end of the academic year, the gymkhana group organizes a sports day.

NCC

The Institute has five Maharashtra EME COY NCC units to provide NCC training to the students. The NCC cadets are sent for military training as well as to the various all India trekking and leadership camps.

Complaints Committee

The Institute has set up a committee for redressal of complaints of sexual harassment and violence against women in the Institute.

Counseling Committee

The Institute has a counseling committee for the students. The members of the committee help the students to deal with difficult situations, academic or otherwise.

The Social Group

With a view to encourage the overall development of the students, the institute has constituted Social Group with all the degree as well diploma students as it members. The social Group organizes extracurricular activities like dramatics, debates, exhibitions, lectures by well known personalities etc. At the end of the academic year, it organizes the Annual Social in which various entertainment programs are presented by the students. It also organizes intercollegiate competitions during the year.
