Symbiosis International University (SIU) is a private coeducational, multi-institutional university located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It has been given official recognition by the UGC and the AICTE. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has conferred an ‘A’ grade to the university. SIU is part of the Symbiosis Society, which is its managing body.
The society was established in 1971 by Padmashree S. B. Mujumdar. It was given autonomous status in 2002 by the Ministry of Human Resources Development[3] and since then has opened many more institutes affiliated with it.
Symbiosis International University has 19 academic institutions[4] spread over nine campuses in Pune, Noida, Bangalore and Nashik.[1] All form part of the Symbiosis Society, with the other institutes in the society being affiliated with other bodies. The Symbiosis Law School is one of the most famous law schools in the country
Inspired by the ideals of ‘Vishwa Bharati’ of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and ‘Antar Bharati’ of Sane Guruji and with a deep desire to help foreign students, an idea of ‘Symbiosis’ was conceived by Dr. S.B. Mujumdar in the year 1971. The motto of Symbiosis is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and truly for the foreign students at Pune it is a ‘Home away from Home’
.
Symbiosis today comprises of 43 institutes imparting training in diverse disciplines. It has students who hail from all states of India and 75 different countries. Symbiosis is known to be a Multicultural, Multilingual and Multinational institution. An institution, where academic democracy prevails. Where law is the religion and freedom of thought and expression is the spirit. Where equality is not preached but practiced. Where Innovation, Passion and Compassion is nurtured.
As a distinguished academician and educationist, Dr. S.B. Mujumdar’s vision has blossomed into a large educational complex from his caring and concern for international students at Pune. His long illustrious career was recognized by the President of India in the prestigious award :
“Padma Shri” in 2005.

Born in a small town Gadhinglaj, near Pune, he obtained a first class first in M.Sc. (Botany) and a Doctorate in Microbiology. He was the Head of the Department of Botany, Fergusson College, Pune for 20 years. He has written many standard books and published several papers in national and international journals. He was also a member of the Executive Council of the Pune University for 9 years.
Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, the Founder of Symbiosis International University, worked during his lifetime in order to bring social justice, international understanding and scientific approaches to the problem of the society. Higher education has played a crucial role in his life. His innovative ways of on education and proactive programmes for changing economy has made Symbiosis known for its brand of education. A highly reputed Indian daily in its survey in 2009, put Symbiosis International University in the third position in India.
Dr. T. P. Singh, Director Symbiosis Institute of Technology completed his B. E., Mechanical Engineering in 1978, M. E. Industrial Engineering in 1989 and Ph. D. Engineering in 1994, all from Prestigious Thapar University, Patiala. He has more than 22 years of teaching and research experience and about 10 years of industrial experience. He occupied the positions of Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Dean Academic Affairs Dr. R Raman has a blend of corporate and academic experience. He started his career with Godrej and Boyce and then ventured into the area of consultancy with – The Leading Edge Consulting Services. His Passion for academics led him into teaching assignment at Vellore Institute of Technology.Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business, Canada gave him the platform for global exposure in teaching Information. Dr. Rajiv Yeravdekar, Director, SIHS has been a merited student throughout. Recipient of the National Merit Scholarship, he graduated from the prestigious B. J. Medical College, Pune in 1985, securing top honours in General Surgery & Obstetrics & Gynaecology. He completed his Masters in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1989 & was awarded the Gold Medal by Pune University for his outstanding academic performance The University offers varied and content rich programmes which are industry specific and has multi-disciplinary approach. These programmes are offered through the constituent institutes of the University which are under the aegis of separate discipline viz. Law, Management, Computer Studies, Health Sciences, Media, Communication and Design, Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering.
At present the University offers 37 post graduate and 21 under graduate programmes all of which are designed with a blend of professional and industry relevance curriculum for the students to embark on the career of their choice.
Symbiosis International University offers a PhD programme under the guidelines prescribed by the University Grants Commission (2009). The programme is offered in the 7 faculties of Law, Management, Computer Studies, Health & Biomedical Sciences, Media, Communication & Design, Humanities & Social Sciences and Engineering.
The University predetermines the number of doctoral students that can be admitted to the programme based on the number of available research guides. The University aims to maintain a high standard in its research, and with this goal in mind, and as per the directives of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor on recommendation of the Academic Council, the University has followed a specific criteria of selection.

Preference is given to full time PhD students and faculty members. | ||||

If the application for a recognized PhD guide is from outside Pune, approval from the respective institute is mandatory. The respective institute must also be a recognised research centre of the University. The University has developed necessary formats and processes for this purpose. | ||||

The eligibility criteria for a recognized research guide is 5 years of teaching experience with a minimum of 2 research publications in peer reviewed journals. | ||||

The University encourages industries/institutes with a proven track record in research to seek recognition as a “Recognized Research Centre” of the University. | ||||

SIU has made major headway into the field of research by establishing the Symbiosis Centre for Research & Innovation (SCRI) in 2011 with the main objective of promoting high quality research and encouraging the faculty to undertake increasing research activities.
Admissions The University offers a variety of programmes at Graduate, Post Graduate, Doctoral and Diploma levels. Programmes are offered in the following seven faculties:
The examination department headed by the Controller of Examinations is responsible for conducting examinations across all the institutes of Symbiosis International University, declaring results & awarding degrees / diplomas. All the policy decisions in connection with the examination are taken by the Board of Examinations of SIU.
The University follows an annual as well as semester pattern of examinations. For evaluation, CGPA (Cumulative Grade Points Average) system is followed where grading is based on the relative performance in the class. In some of the institutes marking system is followed.
The Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) was formalized through a Board of Management (BOM) resolution made in February 2008. The resolution was a fall out of the discussion that took place in the BOM related to Internationalization of Symbiosis International University. It was realized that although the admission procedure for International Students and student’s related services and events have been streamlined to a great extent, efforts are to be made to internationalize the curricula and the profile of faculty and staff in the University.
The mandate that has been given to Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) is to streamline the processes related to International Collaborations, participation in International Conferences & Seminars, International Student Mobility, Setting up of Area Study Centres etc. Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director, Symbiosis is the Executive Director of Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) under the aegis of the Symbiosis International University.
