The Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA),
An initiative of the Kamla Raheja Foundation and the Upanagar Shikhshan MandaI, is one of the premier institue for architecture in Mumbai, India. It offers a Bachelor’s in Architecture degree (B.Arch) and two full time Masters courses (M.Arch. – Urban Design / Urban Conservation). All of these courses are run under the aegis of the University of Mumbai.
KRVIA Fellowship Programme – 2013 – 14 Since its inception, KRVIA has located its architecture education in a wider format of cultural studies. The KRVIA Fellowship Programme was instituted to encourage graduates who have the urge to return to larger questions regarding our discipline.
The deadline for submitting proposals is June1, 2013. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview on 15th June 2013
KRVIA offers a five year degree programme, recognized by the Council of Architecture (COA) under the aegis of the University of Mumbai. The course culminates with a Design Dissertation and a term of practical training.
The Course Structure
The overall course structure is formulated within the framework of the Mumbai University Syllabus. The course is broadly divided into the following three categories that inform each other and cannot be seen as independent.
History and Theory Design Technology
Apart from the mandatory courses there is an array of extra-curricular courses and activities.
Electives are offered in the second and fourth year. A student has the choice of taking any two electives each year. Electives offered in the second year are photography, ceramics, theater, building technology etc., while those offered in the fourth year include construction management, film appreciation and theory, urban theory, conservation etc.
Encounter is a weekly interactive session where practitioners from various fields of culture and technology are invited by the college to present their work and culminating in a discussion with students.
Study trips are conducted every year for Years 1-4. The study undertaken is then integrated into the design studios. More..
The First Year study tour investigates the ways of living and the practices of communities located in rural areas. The attempt is to understand patterns of social, economical and cultural systems and their reflection in the physical fabric of the place. Sketching and diagrammatic representations are encouraged as part of the study.
The Second Year visits towns and cities in the country to study pre-colonial architecture in traditional contexts. Detailed measure drawings are the focus and method of study.
The Third Year students explore institutional architecture in urban and rural contexts. The students map the city through its institutions and study their relationship to the city through drawings, maps, photomontages, graphic novels, documents, etc.
In the Fourth Year study trip students are exposed to ways of understanding the city. The study looks at urban patterns and phenomena to develop tools through which students can understand the production of built form within complex cultural milieus.
Internship programmes are set up by the school for different years where students are exposed to practices outside the realm of academics. More.
The Final internship program is part of the University course structure. In the second semester of the fifth year, students work in registered architecture firms for a period of 4 months. At the end of the internship a viva-voce is conducted by external examiners of University of Mumbai.
Intermediary internship programs are conducted in the second and third year of B.Arch. These are not a part of the University course structure but are encouraged by the school. In the Second Year program students work with non-government organizations, artists, social activists, etc within allied fields for a period of one month. In the Third Year program students have to work with registered architectural firms for a period of one and a half month.
Design Cell internship program is where students of senior classes can work with the school’s own Design Cell on various projects of research and consultancy.
ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION PROCEDURE
B.Arch. Courses
The institute has an intake of 80 seats approved by the Council of Architecture New Delhi. The overall admission process for private unaided colleges in Maharashtra is controlled by MASA (Maharashtra Association of Schools of Architecture) which is a Centralized Allotment Process (CAP). All the students aspiring to take admission needs to have passed the HSC (std. XII) or equivalent examination minimum 50% aggregate marks (with Maths) or Diploma in Engineering under 10+3 Scheme of the State Board of Technical Examinations and secured a minimum 50% aggregate marks (45% for backward class candidates from Maharashtra State only) in the Diploma Examination (or the educational qualification as stipulated in the revised norms laid down by the Director of Technical Education/Government of Maharashtra,) and the compulsory Common Entrance Test (Aptitude Test) conducted at national level. Admission to the F.Y.B.Arch. shall be given by the institute or the admission authority as per the admission procedures laid down from time to time by the competent authority.

M.Arch Courses
The institute has an intake of 40 seats (20 seats for Urban Design and 20 seats for Urban conservation) approved by the Council of Architecture New Delhi.
All the students aspiring to take admission needs to have:
1.Passed with minimum 50% marks in open category and 45% in case of backward class category in B.Arch examination from any recognized university and approved by COA.
OR
2.Passed with minimum 50% marks in open category and 45% in case of backward class category in diploma “Dip in Architecture” from any Technical Board of State Govts and approved by COA.
OR
3.Passed with minimum 50% marks in open category and 45% in case of backward class category in IIA Exam – approved by COA

KRVIA Library:
The Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies Library has a rapidly growing collection of books on architecture and other arts from the world, covering their development through historical periods and philosophical values they embody. Also included in the library are the resources on literature, cinema, photography, history and philosophy. This library is regularly referred by in-house faculty, students, fellows, researchers, as well as from other institutes.
Samples of Various materials and small scale models of sanitary fittings and fixtures and technical data of all such materials are available for reference.
In the year of 2010, an integrated library management software ‘LibexNet’ has been installed and the library operations are fully automated. It is possible to access the library catalogue through Web OPAC in-house as well as through the website. The URL is http://115.248.145.171/webexnet/index.aspx
A digital archive of resources (out of copyright) viz., visual materials consisting of drawings, maps, students’ works and video clippings is also being created to aid academic activities. However, in-house access to these digitized documents of various activities in the institution are permitted.

The core learning and working environment at the KRVIA are the studio spaces. Each student is provided with a dedicated work and storage space for the entire year. The spacious studios are structured to encourage interaction between students of different academic years. The studios are equipped with Wi-Fi internet access, projection facilities and display boards to put up student work.
The KRVIA Library has a growing collection of over six thousand books on architecture and arts from the world, covering their development through historical periods and philosophical values they embody. Also included in the library are the books on literature, cinema, photography, history and philosophy. The Library also subscribes to a number of journals and magazines.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES > COMPUTER LAB
The Computer Lab provides the student with a digital environment to handle Computer aided design, 3D modeling, simulation which are used toward architectural representation; Environmental analysis of the building; Building information modeling aids; Geographical information system aids.
There are 5 servers and 103 pcs in the institute. Out of which 50.pcs and all the four servers are in the Computer laboratory. The configuration of the Computer ranges from P-IV to I-3,I-5 and I-7 with RAM ranging from 2 GB to 8 GB, as per the usage of the computer. The computer lab is also equipped with facilities like Printer Scanner, Essential Software such as Autodesk Building Suit Ultimate 2014, Design Builder, Rhino 4.0 Educational, Photoshop and Corel Draw etc.
The server and nodes are protected by a proxy, along with Microworld EScan Antivirus & Spyware Toolkit Utility Software to ensure the security of the important data.
Student data is stored in their home directory allotted in the server and maintain the backup themselves in pen drive / CDs/External drives etc.
Internet Access is possible from all the computers at all times through Wi-Fi wireless connectivity , There are routers placed strategically in the building in order to ensure range throughout the premises , Wireless network is secured by Sonicwall firewall which allows internet access to registered users only. It is also capable of blocking access to restricted sites
We have Internet lease line for 10 mbps of reliance communication / MTNL Broad band 1 MBPS as backup for the main line
Computer Lab Timing
Monday to Saturday 8.00 am to 8.00 pm (on working day)
The KRVIA has a mechanical workshop with machinery and tools to work with wood and metal. A separate Ceramics section has a kiln and a potters-wheel. Students are encouraged to use the workshop facilities to get a hands-on experience in working with different materials.
The Institute has a dedicated Stationery Shop equipped with drawing, drafting, writing, model-making equipment and computer stationery.
The canteen spills over the stilted area and the lawns of the college campus. It is a lively, interactive space for students as well as faculty.
There are facilities for Basketball, Table Tennis, Carrom, Volleyball, Badminton within the campus. In addition to these, the Institute also has access to a local playground that is shared with neighbouring educational institutes.
Reviews & juries of student work and displays of the Annual Exhibition are held in the triangular-area and the AV Room. The air-conditioned AV Room is also equipped with a projector and an AV-system for presentations and lectures. In addition, the Institute also has access to Upanagar Shikshan Mandal’s auditorium to conduct larger events.
The Materials Lab indexes and catalogues various fixtures and samples that can be accessed by students for research and study.
Alongside the annual lecture series, a public exhibition displaying the work of the students during the academic year is also held. Apart from this, intermittent exhibitions of students’ and the Institute’s work are put up throughout the year.
